Consolidating energy data and making it usable
Together with ti&m, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy has created a central platform with the Energy Dashboard that integrates, processes and clearly visualises data on electricity, gas, energy prices and weather. The solution connects different data sources within a shared architecture and provides current and historical energy data for public administration, politics, the media and the public.

At the heart of the solution is a cloud-native data lakehouse on AWS. Energy data is automatically integrated, harmonised and quality-assured. This creates a consolidated, structured and usable data basis that can be used not only for the dashboard itself, but also for further specialist applications, analyses and future AI applications.

Bronze awards at Best of Swiss Software 2025 for Data & AI Solution

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) dashboard offers insights into Switzerland's energy supply, presenting visualised data on electricity, gas, energy prices and weather. The new version has undergone a complete technical overhaul, featuring a modern design, additional visualisations, and an AWS-based data lakehouse that consolidates databases and paves the way for digitalisation and AI at the SFOE.

Bronze at Best of Swiss Web 2023

The energy dashboard we developed for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy against the backdrop of a possible energy crisis in the fall of 2022 in just a few weeks took bronze at Best of Swiss Web.

Initial situation

Energy data comes from different sources and is often available in different formats and systems. At the same time, requirements for timeliness, data quality and transparency are increasing, both within public administration and towards politics, the media and the public.

With the growing importance of data-based energy policy, the need for a shared and reliable data foundation is also increasing. Information on electricity supply, gas, energy prices and weather data must be processed consistently, prepared transparently and made flexibly usable.

Solution

The Energy Dashboard creates a central data platform that automatically integrates, processes and visualises energy data. Different data sources are brought together in a shared data lakehouse and processed via standardised data pipelines.

The architecture is based on a cloud-native approach on AWS and uses services such as S3, Athena, Lambda, Glue Data Catalog and Apache Iceberg. Historical data states remain reproducible and traceable. Processing takes place in several stages according to the medallion principle, in which raw data is gradually validated, cleaned and prepared for specific applications.

On this basis, a completely redesigned Energy Dashboard was created with modern visualisations and clearly structured user guidance. Data on electricity, gas, energy prices and weather can be specifically analysed, filtered and compared.

The platform has an open architecture and enables further data sources, specialist applications and analysis tools to be integrated step by step.

Impact

The Energy Dashboard creates transparency around Switzerland’s energy supply and provides current and historical energy data in one central place. Public administration, politics, the media and the public gain direct access to consistent and traceable information.

At the same time, the data lakehouse has created a central data foundation for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. Data pipelines run automatically and scalably, new data sources can be integrated in a structured way, and energy data can be used efficiently for further applications.

As a result, the Energy Dashboard today is far more than a visualisation solution. The platform forms the foundation for the further digitalisation of the SFOE and creates the conditions for data-based analyses and future AI applications.

“The Energy Dashboard increases transparency on energy supply and thus fulfills a public interest.”
